INNOVATIVE FIRE AND SECURITY SOLUTIONS FOR AN INTERNATIONAL BUILDING MATERIALS MANUFACTURER
Sector: Building Materials Manufacturing
Sites: 1 Site, Shefford
System: Fire and Access Control
Background
An international building materials manufacturer in Shefford called for the installation of a comprehensive fire alarm system within their office and newly constructed warehouse. They also required a user-friendly entry system at the pedestrian gate, with provisions for future expansion to include vehicle barriers.
Our mission at A-Plus Security was to provide a resilient system that required minimal maintenance and could reliably operate within a mixed-use commercial environment.
Challenges
The first challenge we faced was that the beam detectors within the warehouse space might clash with the high-level storage racking. Due to the size of the premises and the height of the ceilings, smoke detectors were also not a valid option. Moreover, given the complex building environment with live industrial premises adjacent to and surrounding marshlands, it was important for us to adhere to stringent health and safety policies.
Despite the presented challenges, we remained committed to meeting project timelines and ensuring the client's satisfaction with the completed work.
Solutions
A-Plus Security installed a comprehensive fire alarm system, which included CAST devices within the office and low-level warehouse areas. For the high-level warehouse spaces, a new FASST ASD system was implemented to cover the extensive 200m x 80m area. This system comprised four FASST 2 pipe ASD panels equipped with bypass and blow valves to facilitate dust clearance by the maintenance contractor.
To ensure the system's efficiency, low-level testing points were strategically placed at the end of each pipe, enabling annual testing and transit time measurements. We also installed a BPT audio intercom system with a keypad function at the pedestrian gate to allow for easy and efficient entry. This system has the flexibility to accommodate future expansion, including the integration of vehicle barriers.
Advantages of This Approach
- This approach not only provided our client with a reliable system but also offered seamless integration with their site-wide system through interfaces.
- One of the most significant advantages for our client is the simplified maintenance process. Eliminating the need to access high ceilings for smoke detection system checks has made their maintenance tasks far more manageable.
- Additionally, this approach plays a crucial role in reducing the occurrence of false alarms, a common issue in environments with dust and continuous forklift activity.
Installed systems
- Installation of a new CTEC XFP fire panel with CAST devices.
- 4 x Xtrallis FASST ASD panels with 500+ meters of pipe.
